Du bist oder warst Teil unseres Prototype-Fund-Kosmos und vielleicht fragen dich Menschen in deinem Umfeld, wie du deine Förderphase erfahren hast. Eventuell möchtest du auch auf Events oder Talks den Prototype Fund und deine Zeit bei uns vorstellen. Darüber freuen wir uns natürlich sehr! Wir finden es großartig, wenn die Community füreinander Ausschau nach Möglichkeiten hält. Es kann auch sein, dass jemand ein Interview mit dir führen möchte und du nicht genau weißt, wie du am besten über das Förderprogramm sprichst.

Ich wurde angefragt für ein Interview oder Panel. Was sage ich am besten über den Prototype Fund?

Richtig cool, dass du angefragt worden bist. Das ist super für dich und dein Projekt. In solchen Situationen lernt man, sich auf die wesentlichen Informationen zu konzentrieren – eine richtig gute Übung, um dein Projekt im Kern darzustellen.

Wir würden uns darüber freuen, wenn du uns vor einem Interview bzw. dessen Veröffentlichung Bescheid sagst. Mit wem führst du es und wann wird voraussichtlich der Beitrag erscheinen? Es gilt natürlich: Dein Interview, also stehen deine Erfahrungen im Zentrum. Falls du über den Prototype Fund sprechen möchtest, verwende gern die unten stehenden Notizen. Wenn der Beitrag dann veröffentlicht ist, teilen wir ihn auch gern.

Gibt es Ressourcen, die ich nutzen kann?

Informationen zu Programm, Bewerbung und Förderung

Was der Prototype Fund tut und warum, weißt du natürlich schon. Die wichtigsten Infos haben wir hier noch mal zusammengefasst.

Was macht der Prototype Fund?

Der Prototype Fund ist ein Förderprogramm des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), das von der Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland betreut und ausgewertet wird. Einzelpersonen und kleine (interdisziplinäre) Teams können von uns finanzielle und ideelle Unterstützung für die Erprobung von Ideen sowie die Entwicklung von Open-Source-Projekten (im Folgenden: FOSS) in den Bereichen IT-Sicherheit und Software-Infrastruktur erhalten. Wichtig ist, dass es sich um Technologien mit gesellschaftlichem Mehrwert handelt.

Was sind die Ziele des Prototype Fund?

Wir stellen den Raum und die Mittel bereit, die notwendig sind, um innovative Software-Prototypen mit einem Nutzen für die Gesellschaft umzusetzen: Insbesondere für freie Entwickler*innen und interdisziplinäre Teams, die sonst durch staatliche Förderinstrumente nicht berücksichtigt werden. Auf diese Weise wollen wir FOSS und die Menschen, die dahinter stehen, stärken und deren transformatives Potenzial für die gesamte Gesellschaft aufzeigen.

Wie kann man sich um Förderung bewerben und welche Kriterien gibt es?

Einmal im Jahr kann man sich beim Prototype Fund um Förderung bewerben. Die Bewerber*innen müssen mindestens 18 Jahre alt sein, in Deutschland leben oder im Falle von Teams ihren GbR-Sitz in Deutschland haben und ihr Projekt unter einer Open-Source-Lizenz veröffentlichen wollen. Alle weiteren Kriterien und wichtige Informationen findet man unter https://prototypefund.de/bewerbung/. Die nächsten Bewerbungsphasen und Förderzeiträume:

• Jahrgang 02: voraussichtlich Bewerbung 01. Oktober bis 30. November 2025 / Förderzeitraum: Juni bis November 2026, Second Stage: Dezember 2026 bis März 2027
• Jahrgang 03: voraussichtlich Bewerbung 01. Oktober bis 30. November 2026 / Förderzeitraum: Juni bis November 2027, Second Stage: Dezember 2027 bis März 2028
• Jahrgang 04: voraussichtlich Bewerbung 01. Oktober bis 30. November 2027 / Förderzeitraum: Juni bis November 2028, Second Stage: Dezember 2028 bis März 2029

Wie ist der zeitliche Ablauf?

Ca. 8 Wochen nach Einreichungsschluss bekommen die Bewerber*innen Bescheid, ob die Jury das Projekt zur Förderung vorgeschlagen hat. Im Antragsworkshop wird dann der formale Antrag für das BMBF erarbeitet, der über den Projektträger beim Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung eingereicht wird, welches die finale Entscheidung über die Förderung trifft. Zum Start der Förderung laden wir alle geförderten Projekte zu einem Kick-Off-Workshop in Berlin ein. Innerhalb der sechsmonatigen Förderphase haben die Projekte Anspruch auf verschiedene Coachings. Darüber hinaus findet ein regelmäßiger Austausch mit der Projektbetreuung sowie den anderen Geförderten der Kohorte statt. Im Rahmen der Begleitforschung gibt es während und nach der Förderung zudem Umfragen und Interviews zu den Erfahrungen im Prototype Fund. Am Ende der Umsetzungsphase findet ein Demo Day in Berlin statt, auf dem die Projekte die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vorstellen. Projekte, die sich auf eine Verlängerung der Förderzeit auf zehn Monate (Second Stage) beworben haben, reichen im vierten Monat der Förderung eine Präsentation ein und stellen ihre Projekte in einer digital stattfindenden Auswahl­sitzung vor. Auf Basis der Einreichung sowie der Vorstellung entscheidet ein Gremium aus Juror*innen, Prototype Fund und DLR Projektträger über die viermonatige Weiter­förderung.

Ausgewählte Projekte arbeiten in einer viermonatigen Second Stage daran, ihr Projekt nutzbar und bekannt zu machen. Der Fokus liegt bspw. auf User Testing, Community- und Öffentlichkeits­arbeit oder der finanziellen Absicherung. Technische Arbeiten stehen dabei eher im Hintergrund. Die Second Stage endet mit einem halböffentlichen Abschlussworkshop mit ausgewählten, von den Projekten geladenen Gästen sowie Programmbeteiligten.

Information about the program, application and funding

Of course you already know what the Prototype Fund does and why. We have summarized the most important information here.

What does the Prototype Fund do?

The Prototype Fund is a funding program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research that is managed and evaluated by the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. Individuals and small interdisciplinary teams can receive funding in order to test their ideas and develop open source applications in the areas of IT Security and Software Infrastructure. It is important that these are technologies with societal added value.

What are the goals of the Prototype Fund?

We provide the space and resources necessary to implement innovative software prototypes with a benefit for society: Especially for freelance developers and interdisciplinary teams that are otherwise not considered by government funding instruments. In this way, we want to strengthen FOSS and the people behind it and demonstrate their transformative potential for society as a whole.

How can you apply for funding and what are the criteria?

Twice a year, you can apply to the Prototype Fund for funding. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in Germany or, in the case of teams, have their GbR registered office in Germany and want to publish their project under an open source license. All other criteria and important information can be found at https://prototypefund.de/bewerbung/.

The next application phases and funding periods:

• Class 02: Expected application October 1st to November 30th, 2025 / Funding period: June to November 2026, Second Stage: December 2026 to March 2027
• Class 03: Expected application October 1st to November 30th, 2026 / Funding period: June to November 2027, Second Stage: December 2027 to March 2028
• Class 04: Expected application October 1st to November 30th, 2027 / Funding period: June to November 2028, Second Stage: December 2028 to March 2029

What is the time schedule?

Approximately 8 weeks after the submission deadline, the applicants will be informed whether the jury has recommended the project for funding. In the application workshop, the formal application is then prepared, which will be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research via the project management organization. The ministry makes the final decision on funding. At the start of the funding, we invite all funded projects to a kick-off workshop in Berlin. During the six-month funding phase, the projects are entitled to various coaching sessions. In addition, there is a regular exchange with the project supervisor as well as with the other grantees of the cohort. As part of the accompanying research, there are also surveys and interviews on the experiences in the Prototype Fund during and after the funding. At the end of the implementation phase, a Demo Day is held in Berlin, where the projects present the results of their work. Projects that have applied for an extension of the funding period to ten months (‘Second Stage’) submit a presentation in the fourth month of funding and present their projects in a digital selection meeting. Based on the submission and the presentation, a panel of jurors, the Prototype Fund and the DLR Projektträger will decide on the four-month funding extension.

Selected projects work in a four-month Second Stage to make their project usable and known. The focus is, for example, on user testing, community and public relations work or financial security. Technical work tends to take a back seat. The Second Stage ends with a semi-public final workshop with selected guests invited by the projects and program participants.
